VicRoads has declared its intention to sell vacant land linking McBryde street to the Merri Creek parkland in Fawkner.
Sustainable Fawkner strongly believes the State Government should gift this land to Moreland Council to continue to maintain this as open space, and perhaps expand the bordering native grassland reserve into this space.
The Minister for Planning has notified Council through a First Right of Refusal process before they get referred to the Fast Track Government Land Service for rezoning prior to selling on the open market. The parcels of land are at 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 15, and 17 Leonard Street and 154 and 156 McBryde Street, Fawkner.
Moreland Council has been maintaining this land for many years as open space.
There is a small area of remnant native grassland next to this site. Merri Creek Management Committee maintains this important small remnant of native grassland, including doing yearly fire burns of the of a portion of the area to encourage native grass regeneration.
The popular Merri Creek Trail for cyclists and walkers runs behind this site. A link Path could also be constructed from the Merri Creek trail to McBryde street which would link to Victory street, which is a de facto east-west cycling route in Fawkner.
Council is inviting community input. Have your say.
Submissions to Council close at 5 pm on 11 May 2018.
