Switch Off Hazelwood, Switch On Renewable Energy campaign News

From the the Switch Off Hazelwood, Switch On Renewable Energy campaign newsletter :

Did you know that the company HRL is planning to build a new coal-fired power station in Victoria?

Incredibly, the state and federal governments have committed to give $150million of public money to this project. The Environmental Protection Agency is due to rule on HRL’s “Works Approval” application for the proposed 600MW plant sometime in early May. The EPA received a record 4000+ objections to HRL’s application, but there’s still a strong chance that the plant will be approved.

Join community climate activists from across the country to say:

    Wind energy needs your support

In response to a small but vocal minority, the Baillieu government is planning to restrict the location of wind farms, excluding them from within 2km from any dwelling and tourist and growth areas. While wind farms must be sensitively planned, if enacted this policy would mean 50-70% of wind farms currently proposed will be blocked, eliminating Victoria’s main source of renewable energy. The campaign is calling for the government abandon this policy and instead to encourage the use of renewable energy in Victoria.
