Come along to participate in the Merri Creek Bird survey. The next bird surveys along the Merri Creek and at Edwardes Lake will be held on Sunday 19 February, 8.45-10.30am.

Bring drinking water, and binoculars if you have them. Closed-in footwear and a sunhat would also be useful. No dogs, please. Be aware that snakes could be around.

In Fawkner: Bababi Djinanang (Jukes Road grasslands), Fawkner: Meet on Merri Path at end of Jukes Road, Fawkner (Melway 18 A2) at 8.45am.

The birds counted in the survey in November 2011 included a sacred kingfisher, red browed finch, black faced cuckoo shrike, New Holland Honeyeater and many more.

Merri Creek at Fawkner on World Wetlands Day 2012

February 2nd was World Wetlands Day. I cruised on down to the upper parts of Merri Creek at Moomba Park at Fawkner in the late afternoon light to check out our local wetlands. The creek here appears to be in good condition with relatively few signs of physical pollution (plastic, rubbish).

Freshwater wetlands are important carbon sinks says a new scientific study. The Australian Conservation Society commissioned an economic study of the Hattah wetlands within the Hattah-Kulkyne National Park in northern Victoria estimating the economic value of wetlands conservation and found that if healthy water levels are maintained, each year the wetlands provides millions of dollars in economic services such as water filtration, flood control, water storage and habitat preservation for maintaining biodiversity.

Meeting, Films, Dinner January 21

This Saturday, the 21st January, as well as having our regular meeting, we are also starting a new tradition of having film screenings followed by dinner and a discussion.

First Food Swap for 2012

Come along on Saturday 14th January for our first Food Swap of 2012.

We will be setup between 10.30am to 12.30pm at Fawkner Community House.

Just come to the end of the car park for Fawkner Pool.

We had a successful food swap and jumble sale here on 10th December. Lots of clothes and great books were available.

Fawkner Community House is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this Saturday, 26 November, with an Open Day. There will be free food and activities for children and adults, including henna painting, craft activities, singing, gardening activities. We will be having a food swap as well, so come along and say hello (and bring any spare produce you may have)

Also, at Sustainable Fawkner’s next regular food swap on the 10th of December, we are having a garage sale fund raiser at the same time, so if you have any stuff you are no longer using and want to donate it, that would be great. And help on the day would be great too -setting up, buying stuff, helping with packing up and finding homes for the unsold items, etc.

Zero Carbon Moreland has invited Sustainable Fawkner to talk at their monthly pub night for Moreland residents this Thursday. Dave from the Merlynston group is also talking.

The discussion will be about community space and community resilience. If you’re free, come along!

Details are: Thursday 10 November from 6-8pm at the Edinburgh Castle, cnr Albion St and Sydney Rd Brunswick, in the little dining room.
